Brush off dry dirt first. Patch-test any cleaner or conditioner inside the shaft, then use the lightest coat that does the job.

How the cowboy boot happened
Vaquero roots
Spanish vaqueros brought riding-heel boots to the Americas centuries before the cattle drives. The underslung heel that locks into a stirrup, the tall protective shaft, the DNA was set long before Kansas ever saw a longhorn.
The trail-town boot
Cattle drives met bootmakers where the trails ended. In 1875 C.H. Hyer of Olathe, Kansas built what's credited as the first modern cowboy boot, and pioneered mail-order custom fitting, cowboys traced their feet on paper and sent the drawing in.
The founding houses
H.J. Justin started measuring cowboys on the Chisholm Trail in 1879. Sam Lucchese opened near San Antonio's cavalry post in 1883. Rios of Mercedes traces to 1853. The names on today's shelves were born in this window.
The golden age
Enid Justin founded Nocona in 1925, the first woman to own a cowboy boot company, and built it into an empire. Hollywood put boots on every screen, and inlay work, stitched tops, and flamboyant color turned workwear into art.
The exotics era
Tony Lama pushed exotic skins and bold styling into the mainstream. Ostrich, lizard, and alligator went from oddity to aspiration, and the custom shops, Paul Bond, Charlie Dunn, Ray Jones, built five-year wait lists on reputation alone.
The custom renaissance
A new generation of one-bench makers works alongside the heritage factories, and collectors trade vintage pairs like the craft objects they are. Which is roughly where this site comes in.

Talk like a bootmaker
ExoticAny skin other than cowhide: caiman, ostrich, lizard, stingray, elephant. Priced by how the hide is cut as much as by the animal.
Heel counterThe cup that holds the heel of your foot steady inside the boot.
HornbackCaiman or crocodile hide with the ridged back left on, so you get the spines. The belly of the same animal is smoother and looks nothing like it.
LastThe foot-shaped form a boot is built around. It decides how a pair fits more than the size on the label does.
NapThe raised fuzz on suede and roughout. Brushing it one way or the other changes how light sits on the boot, so a scuff often brushes out.
OutsoleLeather, traditionally, and the honest record of how a pair has lived.
PegsWooden pins fastening the arch, lemonwood classically. Old-school makers were judged by their peg rows.
PipingThe cord finishing the side seams, Ray Jones's white piping is the famous example.
Pull strapsThe loops or holes at the shaft top that get a boot on. "Ears," if you grew up saying it that way.
RoughoutLeather worn rough side out, so the nap shows. Built that way on purpose, not a worn-out smooth boot.
ShaftThe tall upper that covers the calf, where the stitching and inlay art lives.
ShankThe support between heel and ball that holds the arch up. A steel or wood shank is why a good boot keeps its shape.
Toe boxThe stiffener shaping the toe: round, snip, square, or full cutter, the fastest way to date a boot.
ToebugThe decorative stitch pattern on the vamp toe. Some shops' toebugs are as identifying as a signature. Related vamp grammar includes bug-and-wrinkle / medallion (Texas Monthly 2002). Soft clue only — not a barcode.
VampThe piece over the top of the foot. On exotic boots this is usually where the expensive skin goes.
WeltThe strip joining upper to sole. A stitched welt means the boot can be resoled for decades.
